What is toughened glass and why is it required?
Toughened glass (also called tempered glass) is processed by controlled thermal treatment to increase its strength. When it breaks, it shatters into small, relatively harmless granules rather than sharp shards. Building Regulations require it in locations where human impact is likely — doors, low-level windows, shower enclosures, and balustrades.
Can you replace toughened glass on the same day?
We carry a range of standard toughened glass sizes and thicknesses on our vans. Many jobs are completed same day. For bespoke sizes or thicker structural glass, we can make the area safe on the same visit and return with the correct unit — usually within 24 hours.
How do I know if my broken glass should be replaced with toughened glass?
Toughened glass is required by Building Regulations in critical locations — doors, side panels adjacent to doors, glazing below 800mm from floor level, shower enclosures, balustrades, and overhead glazing. If you're unsure, our glaziers will advise on the correct specification before starting any work.
Can you replace a shower screen on the same visit?
In most cases, yes. We carry common shower panel sizes and can source less standard sizes quickly. We'll confirm availability when you call.
Is toughened glass the same as laminated glass?
No — they are different products. Toughened glass is a single pane that has been heat-treated for strength. Laminated glass consists of two panes bonded with an interlayer, which holds the glass together when broken. Both are safety glasses but are used in different applications. We supply and fit both.
